    Medical Hair Loss Therapy

Evidence-based pharmaceutical interventions to slow hair loss progression and promote regrowth

    First-Line Treatment

    Pharmaceutical Hair Preservation

Medical therapy represents the first-line treatment for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss). FDA-approved medications work at the cellular level to interrupt the hair loss process, preserve existing hair, and in many cases, stimulate regrowth.

These treatments are most effective when started early in the hair loss process and maintained consistently over time. They can be used alone or in combination with surgical restoration to maximize and maintain results.

    Healthy hair density results

    5α-Reductase Inhibitor — Oral Medication

    Finasteride (Propecia®)

    Mechanism of Action

Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5α-reductase type II, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the primary hormone responsible for miniaturization of hair follicles in androgenetic alopecia.

By reducing scalp DHT levels by approximately 60-70%, finasteride slows or stops the miniaturization process, allowing follicles to recover and produce thicker, healthier hair.

    Topical hair treatment application

    Vasodilator — Topical Solution/Foam

    Minoxidil (Rogaine®)

    Mechanism of Action

Minoxidil's exact mechanism in hair growth is not fully understood, but it appears to work through multiple pathways: widening blood vessels to improve nutrient delivery to follicles, prolonging the anagen (growth) phase, and potentially acting as a potassium channel opener.

Applied directly to the scalp, minoxidil stimulates follicles to transition from telogen (resting) to anagen phase and increases the size of miniaturized follicles.

    Dual Approach

    Combination Therapy

Using finasteride and minoxidil together provides complementary mechanisms of action and superior results compared to either medication alone

    Synergistic Effect

Finasteride addresses the hormonal cause (DHT) while minoxidil directly stimulates follicles, attacking hair loss from two different angles simultaneously.

    Enhanced Results

Studies show combination therapy produces better outcomes in hair count, thickness, and patient satisfaction compared to monotherapy.

    Important Information

    Treatment Considerations

    Continuous Use Required

Medical therapy must be maintained indefinitely to preserve benefits. Discontinuing treatment typically results in gradual return to baseline hair loss within 6-12 months.

    Early Intervention

Medical therapy is most effective when started early in the hair loss process. Once follicles are completely miniaturized or dormant for extended periods, regrowth becomes less likely.

    Individual Response

Response to medical therapy varies significantly between individuals. Some patients experience substantial regrowth while others primarily see stabilization of existing hair.

    Medical Supervision

Medical therapy should be initiated and monitored under physician supervision to ensure appropriate use, monitor for side effects, and adjust treatment as needed.
