7-Axis Robotic
Deep Dive
Understanding the engineering excellence behind ARTAS® precision
Core Engineering
Seven Degrees
of Freedom
The ARTAS® robotic arm features seven independent axes of movement, providing unprecedented flexibility and precision in follicle extraction. This advanced engineering allows the system to approach each follicle at the optimal angle, regardless of scalp curvature or hair direction.
Each axis is controlled by sophisticated algorithms that calculate the perfect positioning in real-time, adjusting thousands of times per second to maintain microscopic accuracy throughout the procedure.
The combination of seven axes enables the ARTAS® system to replicate and exceed the dexterity of the human hand while eliminating fatigue and maintaining consistent precision.

Axis Breakdown
Understanding Each Axis
Base Rotation (Waist)
The first axis provides 360° rotational movement at the base, allowing the entire arm to sweep across the donor area. This enables coverage of the full scalp circumference without repositioning the patient.
360° continuous rotation
Full donor area access
Shoulder Joint
The shoulder joint provides vertical lifting and lowering motion, adjusting the arm's height relative to the scalp surface. This axis compensates for variations in head position and scalp topology.
±45° vertical movement
Height adjustment
Elbow Joint
The elbow joint extends and retracts the arm, controlling the distance between the extraction tool and the scalp. This axis enables precise depth control during follicle extraction.
±90° flexion/extension
Reach and depth control
Forearm Rotation
This axis rotates the forearm section, allowing the extraction tool to approach follicles from different orientations. Critical for matching the natural angle of hair growth.
±180° rotation
Tool orientation
Wrist Pitch
The wrist pitch axis tilts the extraction tool up and down, enabling precise angle matching for follicles that grow at steep or shallow angles relative to the scalp surface.
±60° pitch adjustment
Vertical angle matching
Wrist Yaw
The wrist yaw axis rotates the tool left and right, allowing for precise lateral angle adjustments. This ensures the extraction punch aligns perfectly with the follicle's natural direction.
±45° lateral rotation
Horizontal angle matching
Tool Rotation & Depth
The final axis controls the extraction punch itself, providing rotational movement and precise depth penetration. This axis operates at microscopic precision (±0.1mm) to minimize transection and maximize graft quality.
